Bakersfield man arrested in-connection with killing of Javier Meraz

Ismael Leon arrested on murder charge

Deputies with the Kern County Sheriff's Office have arrested a man accused of killing 23-year-old Javier Meraz.

On Sunday at about 3:16 a.m., deputies were sent to a home in the 100 block of Griffith Street in southwest Bakersfield regarding a shooting.

When deputies arrived, they said they found Meraz with gunshot wounds to his hands and torso. Meraz was taken to Kern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at about 5 a.m.

Through the course of the investigation, detectives said they were able to develop enough evidence to obtain an arrest warrant for 20-year-old Ismael Arsenio Leon.  

On Thursday, at about 3:30 p.m., investigators with the Sheriff’s Special Investigations Division, Gang Suppression Section were able to locate and arrest Leon at a home in the 6500 block of Cottonwood Road.  

Leon will be booked at the Kern County Jail on a charge of murder.
