BAKESFIELD, Calif. - A Bakersfield man hit by a car near Highway 58 and South Union Avenue has died, according to Kern County Coroner officials.
48-year-old Verne Gammon died as a result of his injuries after he was hit by a car, Thursday.
Officers with the California Highway Patrol arrested a Bakersfield man after he hit Gammon and fled from the scene in the early morning hours.
Officers said that William Jennings III was driving his Hyundai near westbound SR-58 from South Union Avenue around 1:30 a.m.
Jennings was driving at a speed greater than 35 miles per hour when he witnessed a man walking onto the roadway in front of him.
Officers said Jennings tried to swerve to avoid hitting Gammon but was unable to avoid the collision.
According to CHP officers, Jennings became frightened and continued down Highway 58 to his home, before calling CHP.
Jennings later reported to CHP officers that he had been in a collision near SR-99 and Panama Lane but was unsure of what he hit.
CHP officers conducted an investigation and learned that Jennings had actually been involved in the collision on Highway 58. Jennings then changed his statement to officials.
