Bakersfield man convicted in gang shooting case, death of Roman Fernandez

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A man was convicted in a significant gang case, Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green announced today.

On Feb. 28, a Kern County jury convicted Mark Mendoza, Sr. of first degree murder and committing the murder in the futherance of a gang for the shooting death of Roman Fernandez.

On Aug. 21, 2011, Mendoza went to a bar on Niles Street in Bakersfield.

Mendoza, a member of the Bakersfield criminal street gang the Varrio Bakers, saw members of a rival street gang inside the bar.

When Mendoza left the business, he used a firearm to shoot Fernandez who was walking in the parking lot.

Fernandez suffered one gunshot wound to the left chest and died a short time later at Kern Medical Center.

Mendoza is facing life without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on March 29.
