MADERA, Calif. - A Bakersfield man was struck and killed by a car while working in Madera.
California Highway Patrol officials said that early Wednesday morning, James Chavala, Jr., 25, was digging trenches with his co-workers along Avenue 9 and Road 35 in Madera.
Officials said Chavala crossed the road to grab a shovel and when he was attempting to cross the road again, he was struck and killed by an oncoming car.
Officials said the impact threw his body about 100 feet.
Investigators said the driver of the car attempted to avoid hitting Chavala, but was unsuccessful in avoiding him.
