BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A local illegal immigrant mother remains in jail this morning after being charged in the death of her three-year-old.

Teresa Corrales appeared in court Thursday for a separate theft charge. 

She and Luis Cortez are currently in jail on an immigration hold, after their toddler died at Mercy Hospital after he was found not breathing at their Union Avenue apartment.

They were arrested for child abuse and being under the influence of drugs.

Their other son, a four-year-old, has been placed in child protective custody.
