Bakersfield police officer shoots knife-wielding man in downtown hotel

Witnesses say man threatened several other people

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Update: The officer involved in a shooting at 1125 1/2 19th Street at the Hart Hotel has been identified. Officer Nestor Barajas is a one year veteran with the department. He is currently on paid administrative leave pending an investigation by the Critical Incident Review Board. 

Bakersfield Police detectives are investigating a shooting inside a downtown Bakersfield hotel after a police officer opened fire on a knife-wielding man.

The shooting happened at 6:55 p.m. Tuesday night at the Hart Hotel, located at 1125 1/2 19th Street.

Witnesses told officers that the suspect, only identified as a 47-year-old white man, had armed himself with a knife and had brandished it at several other people at the hotel. They also indicated what they believed to be an officer telling the suspect to put down the knife before the witnesses heard gunshots.

The suspect died at the scene.

There were no injuries to the officer or any witnesses. The identity of the officer, who has been placed on paid administrative leave, will be released at a later date.
