BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Kern County Coroner has confirmed that a man who was shot by police just minutes into the New Year has passed away.
Abel Gurrola, 25, was pronounced dead Tuesday at 1:04 p.m. at Kern Medical Center.
Witnesses say Gurrola was shooting a rifle into the air at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the New Year, prompting several 911 calls from the Terrace Way Gardens Apartments.
When Bakersfield Police arrived on scene, they heard several more shots and saw Gurrola holding the rifle in his hands.
Police say they ordered him to put the weapon down, but he refused and instead ran from them.
Gurrola was shot in the back of the head during a foot chase with the officers.
He was rushed to KMC, but was pronounced brain dead.
23ABC has learned that Gurrola's family gave hospital staff permission to keep his body on life support so that his organs could be harvested for donation.
