BAKERSFIELD - Thousands of dollars will be raised for cancer research at the 23rd annual Bakersfield Relay for Life this weekend.
Event organizers say the Bakersfield Relay for Life is one of the largest in the world, bringing out many local cancer survivors and their families.
Hosted by the American Cancer Society, teams and event-goers will help raise money for cancer research. Last year Bakersfield was able to raise close to $1.7 million dollars.
Breast cancer survivor, Patsy Romero, has seen the effects of each dollar raised at Relay for Life.
"When I was diagnosed, the thing that really got my through it was knowing the difference research has made," said Romero. "I thought to myself, there is hope, this isn't a death sentence."
Patsy has volunteered for the event for the last 22 years. This year Relay for Life is expected to bring in thousands of people.
As she walks her survivor lap on Saturday, Patsy will be remembering one of her closest friends who died from breast cancer earlier this month.
Susan Ferguson was a long time volunteer and member on the Relay for Life Steering committee. She passed away from triple negative breast cancer.
"It's like my other half was ripped away from me," said Susan's husband Stan Ferguson. "But it's exciting to see all these people come out to support the research that kept my wife alive for years."
Relay for Life kicks off tomorrow at 6 a.m. with the Survivor Lap starting at 10 a.m. at Wingpoint on Airport and Merle Haggard drives.
