A local competition has given students the opportunity to talk about a national health issue.
Two dozen fourth, fifth, and sixth graders shared their thoughts on child obesity and what should be done about it.
It was part of the Bank of America Speech and Essay competition in central Bakersfield.
Students gave a wide variety of reasons that obesity is a problem, including excessive video game playing, watching too much television, and eating too much fast food.
One of the finalists, Joey Akey, said "I would like to see kids eating healthy, getting out, and exercising."
The annual competition is sponsored by Bank of America and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools.
