BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - For 141 years, it has been the resting place of pioneers, settlers, city fathers, gunslingers, Civil War soldiers, judges and the man for whom Bakersfield was named, Col. Thomas Baker.
On Saturday, October 26, a plaque was unveiled to commemorate the Pioneer Section of Union Cemetery as an official Historic Place as recorded by the Historic Preservation Commission of the Bakersfield City Council.
It is the only cemetery in the city that has been so recognized. While there are still burials taking place
within the section today, in order to comply with the Historic Place designation, there may be no
alterations to the existing grave sites and character of the section.
"Being here is like taking a trip back in time," said cemetery general manager, Dave Hepburn. "We are
extremely proud of the heritage of this remarkable parcel of land and want this to be cherished, enjoyed, studied and toured for generations to come."
At the dedication, newly-elected City Councilman Willie Rivera spoke about having the Pioneer Section preserved and maintained.
"This cemetery is a great example of what can be accomplished in elevating the community of southeast Bakersfield," Rivera said.
Cemetery Historian, John Codd and volunteers from Historic Union Cemetery will also be conducting a free public tour at the cemetery on November 2, focusing on many of the individuals whose name are now familiar streets, including Baker, Chester, Brundage, Ming, Planz, Coffee, Castro and others. Reservations are required.
Efforts are now in progress to gain recognition of the Pioneer Section of Historic Union Cemetery by the State of California as a historic landmark.
