Bakersfield's own Kevin Harvick may have been the fan favorite but was eliminated during Daytona 500

Nine car crash pushes fan favorite out of the race

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla - Kevin Harvick won't be winning the Great American Race for the second time.

The pre-race favorite was eliminated today at Daytona International speedway in a multi-car wreck on the 34th lap.

The nine-car accident was triggered when Kyle Busch bumped Kasey Kahne in Turn1, and Stewart, Harvick, Kahne and the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing Chevrolets of Jaime McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya suffered major damage.

Harvick, who won the 2007 Daytona 500, had entered the race as a favorite after winning the Sprint Unlimited and Duel qualifying race.

"That's just a part of this game," Harvick said. "We'll rebound next week in Phoenix and get on with our season."

Today's Daytona 500 came a day after a horrific crash on the front stretch during Saturday's Nationwide race sent an engine through a catch fence and tires and debris into the stands injuring over two dozen fans.
