Best Economy Inn and Suites rooms catch fire after children play with a lighter

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Children playing with a lighter caused a fire at Best Economy Inn and Suites totaling $85,000 in damage Friday evening.

Officials responded to a fire at 7:59 p.m. at the hotel on Olive Tree Court, where one adult and two children were inside the unit.

The fire was spreading to the upper floor as crews helped the three escape and evacuated the adjacent rooms.

The fire alarm and numerous phone calls alerted all residents and management of the incident.

Seventy-six rooms were saved from any damage.

With the exception of the affected units, the hotel is open for business.

The Kern County Fire Department reminds residents of the danger of leaving smoking materials in places where children can find them.
