BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A bicyclist was killed after being hit by a car in Northwest Bakersfield.
The accident happened Tuesday night at 9:41 p.m. on Coffee Road just north of Hageman Road, according to the Bakersfield Police Department.
Officers say the bicyclist, identified as Tony Ray Rumple, was riding his bike southbound on Coffee Road when he was hit by a car.
Rumple was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Ashley Bell, has not been cited or arrested at this point. The spokesperson of the BPD, Michaela Sims, said Bell may face traffic charges.
Officials say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the crash. Sims said it appeared as though Bell was at fault and that she may have been talking on the phone using a legal hands-free device. It hasn't been determined if that caused her to collide with the bicyclist, Sims said.
This investigation is ongoing.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
