BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The driver of a big rig escaped serious injuries early Wednesday morning after the vehicle somehow wound up in the California Aqueduct south of Bakersfield.
The accident happened at 2:41 a.m. near the Grapevine Inspection Facility along Interstate 5.
California Highway Patrol officer Ryan Love says the driver managed to get out before the big rig's cab sank under the water.
"He was a little banged up, but he's been transported to Kern Medical Center," said Love.
The trailer was empty.
The C.H.P. has launched an investigation into how the vehicle ended up in the aqueduct. One southbound lane of Interstate 5 remains closed at this hour while crews work to remove it from the water.
