BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
City leaders passed a bicycle transportation plan just last year and as ‘Bike Month’ gets underway, they're hoping to encourage more people to cycle
Jesus Felix knows all the benefits of riding his bicycle to work, school and home.
"It keeps me healthy. It's a good way for transportation and it's just easier for me," he said.
Felix began riding in 2009 and can't imagine using any other form of transportation. He's taking part in ‘Bike Month’ to help educate the community.
"The purpose of bike month is just to bike to work, bike to school, grocery store, anywhere possible you can take your bike," said Felix.
Events planned include "Bike to Work Week," and "Bike to Work day" helping make first-time riders become regular bicycle commuters.
"Biking brings everyone from different social economic backgrounds and also different ages together because anyone can ride a bike," said Maja Perez of Bike Bakersfield.
According to the League of American Bicyclist, more than half of the U.S. population lives within five miles of their workplace making bicycling, a feasible and fun way to get to work.
"You have the same rights and you have to follow the same laws as motorists. A lot of people tend to forget that when they're on the bike and that's why we're here to show through example, through education and to show you this is how you correctly ride," she said.
Between 2000 and 2011, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew 47 percent due to an increase interest in healthy, sustainable and economic transportation options.
"The benefits are its fun, it's number one and you just really have a good time and you spend that time getting a little exercise every day and just getting out and enjoying the weather together and seeing a different view of Bakersfield," said Bob Smith of the Bakersfield City Council.
City leaders are working on obtaining more grants allowing crews to re-pave streets and create better bike lanes.
