BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Clubs of Kern County's Executive Director was named National Executive of the Year.
During the Boys & Girls Clubs of America's National Conference in Orlando, Fla., on May 3, Zane Smith was deemed National Executive of the Year.
This award is given to a Boys & Girls Club Executive Director that has made significant contributions to the work while in their position of Executive Director.
In 1996, Zane Smith began as the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield. Within the first couple of days, he realized that the Boys & Girls Club was experiencing some difficult times. At that time, the club was in an old run down church that served around 45 kids a day, had an annual budget of less than $250,000, and was nearly ready to shut its doors.
Within the first year, Smith was able to lead the organization out of its financial woes, while managing the 1.5 million dollar construction of a brand new Boys & Girls Club facility for the youth.
