Woman allegedly stole car during test drive, tried stealing second car, drove recklessly in Canyon

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Lake Isabella woman has plead not guilty in court today after police say she tried to steal a car during a test drive, then led officers on a wild chase.

Bakersfield police responded to a carjacking that happened in the 200 block of Oak Street Wednesday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Rebecca Springston stole the car from Smart Auto Dealership at knife point with a victim inside, police said.

The victim was released from the 2007 Mazda 6 at Beach Park.

At about 4:46 p.m., a caller reported to the Bakersfield Police Department that a woman who was possibly under the influence of alcohol was driving a silver Mazda 6 and almost hit a vehicle on Highway 178.

The caller followed the vehicle, which stopped at a Chevron Gas Station located near Highway 178 and Morning Drive. The vehicle left the gas station before officers arrived; however, the caller continued to follow the vehicle and keep officers updated as to the its location, officials said.

At about 4:56 p.m., officers located the vehicle traveling east on Highway 178. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Miramonte Road; however, the driver, identified as Springston, failed to stop and led officers on a pursuit, officials said.

The vehicle traveled east on Highway 178 and officers discontinued pursuing Springston as she entered the Canyon.

A short time later, officers traveled into the canyon where they were flagged down one to two miles east of the mouth of the canyon and advised them that Springston attempted to steal their vehicle. Springston was unsuccessful so she fled still occupying the Mazda 6, police said.

Officers observed Springston now traveling westbound where she nearly struck a Bakersfield Police Department patrol vehicle and again failed to stop for officers, police said.

Officers staged near the mouth of the canyon and attempted to stop Springston’s vehicle as she exited the canyon traveling west on Highway 178. Officers pursued Springston for about 20 minutes where she repeatedly drove in an unsafe manner giving no regard for the safety of other motorists, police said.

Springston’s vehicle came to a stop on Highway 58 near Hart Flat Road where she was taken into custody.
