BPD, KCSO combine on serial sexual assault case, press conference held

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Police Department and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office are vigilantly investigating the sexual assaults that have occurred within the last two months in the East Bakersfield area, said Bakersfield Police Public Information Officer Michaela Sims.

The Bakersfield Police Department and Kern County Sheriff’s Office have combined personnel to form a joint investigative task force, officials said.

The partnership of this task force has led to further investigation of an attempted sexual assault that occurred on July 1 in the 2900 block of Virginia Avenue where the suspect descriptions and actions are similar in nature to the three previous reported cases.

The suspect is described as a Black male with a dark complexion, in his late 20’s to 30’s, 5’8” to 6’0” tall with a medium build. He has been seen wearing a black ski mask, dark hooded sweatshirt and shorts. In the most recent case he was in possession of a handgun.

In addition, the task force is further investigating two previously reported burglaries that also occurred in the 2900 block of Virginia Avenue on March 25 and May 14 that may possibly be related, officials said.

The task force has established a hotline for phone calls regarding any of the previously mentioned cases. The phone number for this hotline is (661) 852-7800. The attached flyer is currently being distributed to the community in a proactive effort to educate and inform the public of the previous sexual assaults and important safety tips to utilize.

The task force strongly encourages the community to report anything that may be relevant to this investigation, which may lead to the identification and arrest of this dangerous suspect.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect or information related to any of these cases is urged to call the hotline or the Secret Witness Line at (661) 322-4040. Both lines operate 24 hours a day.

Both agencies are asking for the community’s assistance in locating this suspect. The suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. Do not attempt to contact this individual, call 911, officials said.

The police department offered these safety tips:

  • Be vigilant of your surroundings at all times.
  • If you observe someone watching you or feel that you are being followed, do not go home. Go to where you feel safe and contact law enforcement immediately.
  • Get a good description of the individual and/or vehicle.
  • Leave outside lights on at night.
  • Have good working locks on all doors and windows – and use them!
  • Place wooden dowels in window sliding area and/or something like a broomstick in the track area of sliding doors.
  • Check who is at the door before opening it, and do not open the door to an unexpected visitor.
  • If you hear any suspicious or unusual noises during the night, do not hesitate to dial 9-1-1.
