BAKERSFIELD - A BPD Sergeant and Centennial girls basketball coach was hospitalized Wednesday after his patrol car was in a head-on collision with a pick up truck.

The crash happened at 3:30 p.m. on Gosford and N. Laurelglen in Southwest Bakersfield.

Sgt. Clayton Madden was in his patrol vehicle at a complete stop at a red light in the left turn storage lane of Gosford Rd. Brian Perez, 39 was driving his 1994 GMC Pickup northbound on Gosford Rd., when the vehicle ahead of him began to slow down for the northbound yellow light at that intersection.

Perez swerved into the adjacent lane to pass that vehicle, lost control and struck Sgt. Madden’s stopped vehicle head on.

Both drivers were transported by Hall Ambulance to Kern Medical Center.

Sergeant Madden received injuries to his back and knees. Perez had a complaint of pain to his lower back.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.  Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in this collision.
