BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - An early-morning house fire has turned into a death investigation on Kilkenny Court near Hosking Avenue and Akers Road in southern Bakersfield, according to Sgt. Frank Gonzales of the Bakersfield Police Department.
Fire crews responded to the 4200 block of Kilkenny Court Saturday morning for a small fire and that when they found 56-year-old Clara Basta dead in the garage, Gonzales said.
Officials are currently looking for the woman's car: a 2002 Dodge Intrepid, with a license plate CU4JVA.
Neighbors who knew Basta said that she had lived in her home for over a decade.
"We actually grew up with her...and we actually played with her little son," said neighbor Arnaldo Tafoya.
Police believe Basta did live with a roommate, but was not home at the time of the incident.
The official cause and manner of death is under investigation, officials said.
Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the BPD immediately at (661) 327-7111.
