BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A candlelight vigil will be held for a man who was shot by police on New Years Day and died.

Abel Gurrola, 25,  was pronounced dead Tuesday at Kern Medical Center.

Witnesses say Gurrola was shooting a rifle into the air at the stroke of midnight to celebrate the New Year, prompting several 911 calls from the Terrace Way Gardens Apartments.

Police say they ordered him to put the weapon down, but he refused and instead ran from them.

Gurrola was shot in the back of the head during a foot chase with the officers.

The vigil will be Saturday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., at 720 Terrace Way in Bakersfield.
