Cause of Oildale house fire that left 21-month-old dead released

OILDALE, Calif. - Arson investigators have determined the cause of the fire that resulted in a 21-month-old boy dying in Oildale.
On, Wednesday, June 19, the Kern County Fire Department went to the 300 block of Washington Street, in Oildale, regarding multiple reports of a home on fire with a resident still inside.
Firefighters said they arrived to the scene and were met with heavy smoke and fire showing.
Firefighters began a rapid, detailed search of the structure for the trapped occupant, a 21-month-old boy. During the search, firefighters located the child who received fatal injuries.
The Kern County Fire Department’s Fire Investigations Unit began working to determine the cause of the incident. Fire investigators found that a juvenile playing with a lighter and candle caused the fire.
The Kern County Fire Department wants to communicate to the public the importance of keeping matches and lighters away from children.
