BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - City leaders are preparing to re-open the former animal shelter on Mount Vernon, which was once occupied by the county.
Renovations are happening right now at the facility where it will be run by the city of Bakersfield and the SPCA.
The shelter will be renamed "City of Bakersfield Animal Care Center."
Volunteers as well as contractors are painting the shelter and preparing the kennels.
Dogs and cats caught by city animal control officers will be brought to the Mount Vernon location.
People living in the city will also be able to bring in stray animals.
The city plans to have the Mount Vernon facility up and running by the middle October.
