BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
A Bakersfield man was murdered in Miami, now family and friends are left to grieve from 2,800 miles away.
Jerry Sherrell, 54, was born and raised in Bakersfield.
His family says he traveled the country as a tunnel worker.
Miami police say Sherrell was shot and killed Monday night by two teens that were trying to rob him.
Police say Sherrell had gone out for a pack of smokes at about 11:30 p.m. when he was confronted by the teens less than a block from home.
Cops say a 14-year-old held Sherrell at gunpoint while 16-year-old Gregory Cooper demanded his cell phone.
Sherrell leaves behind his mother, two daughters and ten grandchildren.
Miami police have charged cooper with first degree murder but have not yet arrested the other teen.
Family here is planning a memorial but no date for the service has been set.
