DELANO, Calif. - The Delano Police Department held a press conference Saturday addressing an incident on Browning Road and 9th Avenue.
At about 11:31 a.m., Delano Police responded to the 2000 block of Girard Street for a report of gang members congregating and possibly vandalizing property before fleeing in a pickup truck, officials said.
When officers tried to make contact with a green truck, a high-speed chase began, officials said.
The officers followed the truck outside of Delano for 5 to 10 minutes, official said.
The green truck was heading westbound and ran a light at Browning Road and 9th Avenue at about 12:15 p.m. The truck hit a white Suburban heading southbound, then power pole, officials said.
The occupant, identified as Alejandro Marquez Gonzales, 26, got out of truck and started shooting at police, officials said.
Police returned fire injuring Gonzales in upper torso and arm. Gonzales was transported to Kern Medical Center, officials said.
No police officers were injured.
The driver of white suburban had minor injuries and was taken to KMC.
The Kern County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting. The Officers were placed on administrative leave pending investigation. The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Delano Police at (661) 721-3377.
