BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - When the weather heats up, donations for blood tend to go down, according to health clinics. With about 20 percent of donors coming from high schools, which are out of session, the clinics said they rely on many smaller mobile drives to keep blood supplies coming in to save lives.
One way local clinics said they are encouraging blood donations during the summer months is by inviting people to their donor centers and participating in the 'Two Tickets to Paradise Blood Drive.'
SC Communication, Inc. is sponsoring the drive from July 13 through 20. Donors can enter to win a trip for two to Catalina Island.
There will also be two social events: one at the Bolthouse Donor Center, 11515 Bolthouse Drive, on Monday, July 15 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., and another at the Truxtun Donor Center, 5901 Truxtun Avenue, on Thursday, July 18 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m.
Both socials will have an island vibe and blood donors all week will be able to enter a drawing for a trip for two to Catalina Island.
This is the second year for the event, which proved very popular with new and returning donors last year.
The Truxtun Donor Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Bolthouse Donor Center is open Monday and Wednesday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is closed Friday and Saturday.
Both centers are closed on Sunday.
