BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - You have a chance to save dozens of lives by simply checking a box while you fill out your drivers license form.
April is National Donate Life month and locals are asking for your help to encourage as many people as possible to sign up to become registered organ donors.
23ABC spoke with local double lung recipient Renaye Fink about how a donor changed her life.
"I was down to 8% lung capacity and I didn't think I was going to make it" Fink explained.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services more than 117,000 people are currently sitting on the transplant list and on average 18 people die daily.
Lori Malkin, the founder of JJ's Legacy, is using this month to spread awareness on the desperate need for donors by sharing her personal story.
Malkin's son Jeffrey Johns became a donor after being declared brain dead back in 2009.
"He was a very giving young man and he would've loved to know that he saved somebody's life which he did, he saved 5 lives" Malkin said.
You can register to become a donor at any DMV or online.
