Bicyclist killed by driver using cell phone

Police say a local woman was talking on the phone using a hands free device when she hit and killed a bicyclist last night in northwest Bakersfield.

According to police, Tony Rumple was riding his bike south on Coffee Road near Hageman Road when he was hit by a car being driven by 26-year-old Ashley Bell.

Investigators say Bell was talking on the phone and even though she was using a hands free device, she was still found to be at fault for the crash.

Rumple was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Bell has not been cited or arrested but she could still face charges in the crash.
