Edwards Air Force Base workers furloughed because of the government shutdown will head back to work

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The government shutdown may still be in effect, but this morning hundreds of thousands of workers are heading back to work -- including some right here in Kern County.
Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced that civilian workers furloughed during the government shutdown have been asked to go back to work.
According to the Bakersfield Californian, that includes 900 workers at the Air Force Material Command at Edwards Air Force Base.
Hagel says that the employees can return to work because of a law that allows the Department of Defense to end furloughs for workers whose responsibilities contribute to the morale, well-being, and readiness of service members.
