SHAFTER, Calif. - Higher temperatures equal a short school day at Maple Elementary in Shafter.
School officials say when the temperature is over 100 degrees, students are dismissed at one o'clock.
The school, which is more than 100 years old, is only equipped with swamp coolers, making it unbearable for students in the afternoon heat.
Staff members were scrambling to notify parents of the 280 students.
The aging school is on the list for modernization grants, but has yet to be selected.
Unfortunately for parents, 'Back to School' night has NOT been canceled. It will begin at 6:30 tonight.
