Event celebrates culture, art, education

Event costs $1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - An event to celebrate a culture and educate others on the culture will be held tonight.

The Bakersfield Museum of Art's annual Altares de Familia community-wide celebration for Dia de los Muertos will be Friday night.

The museum hopes to bring the Kern County community together for this cultural, artistic and educational experience.

This year the event will have 35 families in the gardens with family altars, live music, dancing, food and arts and crafts vendors.
There will also be activities for children including sugar skull making, mask decorating and face painting.
In addition, Dignity Health will be on site with free health screenings and the Museum will be open so that visitors can enjoy the "Paul Strand: Mexican Portfolio" exhibit.
Paul Strand is one of the towering figures of American 20th century photography. His work is typified by great richness and sensuousness of surface detail, making him one of the major forces of photographic modernism.
Admission is $1 per person. Bakersfield Museum of Art is located at 1930 R Street. For more information call 661-323-7219 or visit www.bmoa.org/altares
