Fatal car crash on Columbus and University, road closure

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -  

Two people are dead after a car crash at Columbus Street and University Avenue.

A green 2001 Mazda sedan ran a red light driving northbound on Columbus crossing the University Intersection around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning when it was t-boned by a grey Nissan SUV, witnesses said. 

The Bakersfield Police Department said the SUV then hit a third vehicle causing minor damaged. The person inside that car was not hurt.

33-year-old Leonel Del Toro and 31-year-old Severo Jose Ramirez were pronounced dead at the scene.

35-year-old Felicitas Mendoza of Bakersfield and two young girls who were in the SUV were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Officers did not find evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene, but the crash is still under investigation.
