What is believed to be the San Joaquin Valley's first flu-related death this season has happened in Madera.

According to the Fresno Bee, the 61-year-old woman had a history of diabetes and was admitted to the hospital with flu-like symptoms.

She died over the weekend.

The California Department of Public Health has confirmed four influenza-related deaths, however, it's not known whether that number includes the Madera death.

Though the exact cause of death remains unknown, officials said lab results confirmed the woman had the flu when she was admitted to a Madera hospital.

Health officials remind the public that the best way to prevent getting the flu is to practice good hygiene and to get a flu shot which is still widely available and effective.
