Five people injured after car careens into trash cans in central Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Five people were hurt after a early morning car crash sent barrels of trash into a central Bakersfield street.

According to Bakersfield Police officials, the accident happened at 2:39 a.m. Friday morning in the 1400 block of Ming Avenue.

Investigators say the driver of a Chrysler PT Cruiser swerved directly into the path of several garbage cans -- hitting and sending them into the roadway -- before slamming into the back of a parked minivan.

The driver of the PT Cruiser -- whose identity hasn't been released -- suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officers say he will be arrested following his release for driving under the influence.

Four other people in the car also suffered minor-to-moderate injuries.

The roadway was closed for about an hour so street sweepers could clean up the spilled garbage.
