Cause of apartment fire in east Bakersfield: Smoking material in trash, officials said

Four units damaged

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Flames erupted at an apartment complex in East Bakersfield.

Officials said the fire was reported just before 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Vernon Vista apartment complex on Eric Way, near the intersection of Mt. Vernon Avenue & Columbus Street.

Bakersfield City firefighters & Kern County fire crews are currently working to extinguish the blaze. There are no early reports of damage or injuries.

Flames were knocked down by around 6:30 Wednesday morning.

Everyone reportedly made it out safely. The Bakersfield Fire Department said two units sustained fire damage, with an additional two units enduring smoke damage only. Damage was estimated at $325, 000.

Officials said the cause of the fire was discarded smoking material in a waste basket.
