LEBEC, Calif. -
The list of retail stores at the outlets at Tejon Ranch continues to grow just as the facility prepares to open later this summer. Columbia Sportswear and Fossil are just some of the shops bringing Kern County more than a thousand new jobs.
Construction crews are hard at work, finishing the 320,000 square foot shopping facility known as the Outlets at Tejon.
"I’m pretty excited. I think Kern County needs one of these. I mean there's Tulare and my fiancé and my sisters, they would drive to Tulare when they were driving through and it seems like something that we would need in this area with a large populous," said Lucas Espericueta of Bakersfield.
The Outlets are being built on Interstate 5 between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, just south of the 99 Interchange at the base of the grapevine. Its promises shoppers a closer place to spend their money.
"We needed something out there. I do travel a lot from la to out here and often times, we'll go to the outlets in other areas," said Mari Goodman of Bakersfield.
70 retail stores including Nike, American Eagle, and just announced: Fossil and Columbia Sportswear plan on opening up at the outlets, creating hundreds of new jobs.
"We have between 800 to 1,000, to 1,500 jobs based upon estimates we're getting from existing retailers and tenants that are coming in and we want to let people know where they can go for job training so, they can qualify for those jobs," said Barry Zoeller of the Outlets of Tejon.
Career fairs are planned for the coming weeks and job openings are now being posted on the Outlet's Facebook page.
"This is just a great opportunity for people to embrace what is a mutual benefit. It's going to be an opportunity to shop, to be able to enjoy the expansion of opportunity within Kern County, economically from a retail perspective but then also the opportunity to be able to enjoy new opportunities as well," he said.
The Outlets are scheduled to open august 7th right in time for the back-to-school rush.
