B.P.D. officer shot in head, two suspects killed

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Bakersfield Police officer was rushed to the hospital Monday morning after he was shot and injured during an early-morning shootout outside the Four Points by Sheraton hotel.

According to B.P.D. Public Information Officer Michaela Sims, the officer -- whose identity has not been released -- sustained a moderate gunshot wound to the head. The injury does not appear to be life threatening.

A second officer sustained a minor injury unrelated to the gunfire.

The shootout happened at 12:34 a.m. during a traffic stop in the east parking lot of the Four Points by Sheraton hotel on California Avenue, according to Sims.

Both occupants of the vehicle were shot and killed.

The Four Points by Sheraton hotel was locked down following reports of the shooting.

A hotel official confirmed to 23ABC the hotel was placed under lockdown by the Bakersfield Police Department at 12:30 a.m. Monday morning, and guests could not enter or leave their rooms.

23ABC spoke to several guests who were stranded outside the hotel -- some of whom said that family members had heard a large amount of gunshots just before the lockdown.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Bakersfield Police Department at (661) 327-7111.
