BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Wednesday Fresh and Easy said sales have been sluggish since they opened their doors back in 2007 and now they may be forced to shutdown.
The health food giant has about 200 stores and more than 5,000 employees in the U.S.
Parent company, U.K. based Tesco, says they're seeking a buyer for the grocery chain or they will be forced to close all their stores.
Locally there are six Fresh and Easy's around Kern County which would mean more than one hundred people could find themselves jobless.
The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union released this statement about the company's potential closure, "Tesco's announcement forces thousands of Fresh and Easy workers to face a holiday season filled with uncertainty and fear. These job losses could have been avoided if Tesco had chosen to engage with community stakeholders and its customers."
According to the Los Angeles Times, Tesco has received inquiries from companies interested in acquiring all or part of the chain.
