Saving Buddy and Mittens, local firefighters are now equipped to save your family pet when they respond to a house fire.

This all thanks to two young Girl Scouts. Hailey and Kylie, members of Troop 376,  started a T-shirt fundraiser to fund pet oxygen masks.

The Bakersfield Fire Department can now use these masks that fit the tiniest kitten to the fluffiest dog, three sizes in all, to ensure your family pet gets out in case of a fire.

For their efforts, the girls earned the Silver Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadet can earn.

"Some families, their pets are their kids. so its the same thing if you pull their kid out of the fire,"  Bakersfield Firefighter Aaron Guillen said.

"Historically we used masks that work well on humans but not very well on pets." Deputy Chief Tyler Hartley said.

Now all Bakersfield Fire engines are equipped with the kits.
