BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A large grant will allow Bakersfield Police to catch more drunken and drugged drivers.
The Bakersfield Police Department received a $195,000 grant for its "Avoid the 18" DUI Task Force.
The California Office of Traffic Safety issued the grant. The BPD will spend the money across the entire county.
The BPD can target those who get behind the wheel while impaired.
Officers from 18 law enforcement agencies across the county will help staff checkpoints as well as DUI task force deployments.
The last time the BPD set up a DUI drivers license checkpoint in Sept., officers arrested seven people for driving under the influence, and another 21 other were behind the wheel without a valid license.
