Grenade found outside home in northwest Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Sheriff's Bomb Squad was called out Wednesday to a home around 8 p.m. after a person discovered a hand grenade in northwest Bakersfield.

The person told deputies he had recently received boxes of miscellaneous items from a friend who was a WWII veteran and had passed away. While going through the boxes he found what he believed to be a grenade.

Technicians with the bomb squad were able to retrieve the undetonated device, and there were no injuries reported.

It was later rendered safe.
