The Kern County Planning Commission has approved a Muslim Community Center and School to be built on the southwest.
All commissioners voted yes to approve the project's conditional use permit which included several revisions such as moving a block wall providing access for utilities and addressing traffic control issues.
The group will now be able to build a church, community center, and school on a nine acre property on the corner of Stockdale Highway and Driver Road.
The school, which is about five years away from being built, will serve kindergarten through eighth grade.
The commission's decision comes despite people living in the area voicing concerns about the extra traffic the church could bring and the buildings' architecture not blending in with nearby homes.
