BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Heart Hospital says women should have a cardiovascular check-up starting at age 20 and then follow-up every 5 years after that.

There is now a specialized clinic where woman can have those check-ups done at.

Starting today, the Bakersfield Women's Heart Center was taking appointments - as an extension of the Bakersfield Heart Hospital.

The center is the first of its kind in Kern County and one of less than 50 nationwide.

Michelle Oxford, Bakersfield Heart Hospital vice president of business development, says the symptoms of cardiovascular disease are different for woman - so having a clinic tailored to their needs is important.

"They can schedule an appointment and do a $25 heart health check-up," Oxford said. "Which is inclusive of blood work, a nurse consultation that reviews family history and then at the end of the visit the patient can see their heart age and their risk factors."

The Woman's Heart Center also offers an online assessment. If you have recently visited your physician and know your blood work - you can learn a bit about your heart age and cardiovascular risk factors from the comfort of your own home.

Oxford said that the woman have already been calling to schedule appointments.
