Heart disease survivor urges women to learn about prevention, symptoms, resources

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A Bakersfield heart disease survivor is helping other women living with the disease.

Nikki Cross, survivor, and Beverly Thompson, with Bakersfield Heart Hospital, led a support meeting Saturday.

Heart disease is the number one killer of women.

Cross said it is important the women learn prevention and how to cope with the disease.

"It's not an older generation's disease so there's a huge need for women to educated about what it means to have heart disease and what to look for and what the symptoms are and what to do about it," Cross said.

Forty-two million American women are living with or are at risk for heart disease.

Cross and Thompson are working on behalf of the National Coalition for Women and Heart Disease.
