BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Clean up along Highway 178 through the Kern River Canyon has been completed and the roadway officially reopened Friday.
Multiple rock slides closed Highway 178 at the mouth of Kern Canyon on Aug. 19.
Boulders and dirt covered both lanes.
Cal-Trans officials said that about 90 percent of the rock and mud was cleared on Aug. 23.
Cal-Trans brought in geologists from Sacramento to analyze the saturation of the hill due to the culverts. Officials said they need to ensure the safety of the road before traffic can resume.
On Aug. 22, Cal-Trans crews were operating heavy equipment in and out of the Kern River Canyon. All traffic was directed to use alternate routes in and out of the Canyon.
