BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Historic Union Cemetery is hosting free tours at its Pioneer Section. The theme is called "The Good, The Bad, and The Judges." The tours are led by Cemetery Historian John Codd and Friends of Historic Union Cemetery Volunteers.
The Cemetery was first established back in 1872 with the burial of Bakersfield founder Col. Thomas Baker. The Historic Union Cemetery is the final resting place of many historic figures including early pioneers and settlers, city fathers, politicians, jurists, soldiers (from as far back as the Civil War) and participants of Old West shoot outs.
The Pioneer Section has been designated a Historic Place by the City of Bakersfield. The cemetery invites the public to tour the grounds, see old grave markers and private mausoleums dating back to the late 1800's and touch history.
