BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - A group of local veterans returned to Kern County Monday night following a weekend trip to Washington, D.C.

Veterans were offered the unique experience -- for free -- courtesy of Honor Flight Kern County.

Members on this latest trip departed Saturday and spent the weekend in our nation's capitol, visiting with local Congressman Kevin McCarthy.

It also included a special honor for local veterans -- a wreath laying ceremony at the National World War II Memorial.

"We had two of our people [who] went out there and brought it out," said Navy veteran Bob Gagnon. "The Marines took over and did the rest, and it was tear time."

So far, Honor Flight Kern County has sent about 200 men and women on trips to Washington, D.C. The trips are made possible by donations from Kern County residents and businesses.
