Batman: The Killing Joke
Adapted from Alan Moore's stunning 1988 graphic novel, the animated film delves into the origins of Batman's archenemy, the Joker, and the inevitability that one will end up killing the other. The villain hatches a sadistic plan to push Batman and Commissioner Gordon to the point of criminal psychosis. Excellent voice performances from Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill, as well as writing that doesn't shy away from the source material's darkness, grant the production a top-flight quality. The Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo includes two episodes of "Batman: The Animated Series," as well as a featurette on the Joker.
Game of Thrones: Season 6 (digital)
HBO's drama, based on the George R.R. Martin fantasy series, reaches dizzying new heights in its latest outing, moving its many chess pieces into place in shocking ways. Few series in history can match the visuals, performances and ingenious writing that the series musters, creating a cottage industry of pseudo-academics and superfans who digest and analyze its every revelation. Because the show is so rich and dense, it merits purchase rather than rental to serve for multiple viewings and reference. The season is available on iTunes, Vudu and other online retailers.
Scooby-Doo and WWE: Curse of the Speed Demon
With a regular output of movies that meld the classic mystery-solving gang with pop culture icons, "Scooby-Doo" continues to be as relevant now as it was in its heyday three and four decades ago. In bizarre but entertaining fashion, this movie's mashup rounds up a slew of past and present WWE personalities, who are taking part in a rigged off-road race that it's up to Scooby-Doo and crew to solve. Wicked cultural references meld with the usual wholesome fun of the franchise to make for an entertaining ride. The Blu-ray/DVD/digital copy combo is light on extras.
Supergirl: Season 1
DC Comics-based movies may be having trouble pleasing fans, but the brand is having far more success on TV, with this dramedy about Superman's cousin soaring. Melissa Benoist plays the superheroine, who doubles as an assistant to a megalomaniacal media mogul (Calista Flockhart). Riveting action and solid character work bolster the series, which is moving from CBS to CW for its sophomore effort. The Blu-ray/digital copy combo includes the 2015 Comic-Con panel, deleted scenes, a gag reel and several background featurettes.
The Tiger
Korean writer/director Park Hoon-Jung teams with Kroean meag-star Choi Min-sik to spin a tale of a retired sharpshooter who tangles with the country's last tiger in 1925. The drama is bolstered by political echoes, including a lingering sense of Korean resentment toward Japanese occupation of the time. The film, which is also available digitally and on Blu-ray, has slim extras.
