Houchin Community Blood Bank in need of blood donations

Witner storm shut down East coast blood centers

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Houchin Community Blood Bank is in dire need of more blood donations to fill their emergency supply.

Officials with the blood bank said that winter illnesses and holiday travel have affected the local emergency blood supply.

The blood bank posted a photo on their Facebook page Friday that shows empty shelves in desperate need of more donations.

The bank is asking healthy people with O- and O+ blood to help donate on Friday and Saturday. They said the need for O- blood is the greatest.

The National Blood Exchange has also informed Houchin that the winter storm on the East coast has shut down many blood centers from Maine to Virginia and the Great Lake region.

Donors are welcome to  drop in or call for an appointment at 661-616-2505. Appointments can also be made online at www.hcbb.com. Hours of Operation at the Truxtun Donor Center, 5901 Truxtun Avenue, are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, and Saturday are 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
