BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -

More than 200 volunteers gathered to build a new playground at the California Living Museum on Saturday.

Volunteers from Pacific Gas and Electric Company and the California Living Museum, organizers from KaBOOM! and residents of the Bakersfield community joined forces to build the new playground.

The new playground's design is based on drawings created by children throughout the community who participated in a Design Day event in September.

Today's kids spend less time playing outside than any previous generation, in part because only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground. This play deficit has profound consequences for kids physically, emotionally and cognitively.

The new playground will provide thousands of children who visit the museum with a safe place to play.

Currently, the museum only has old, out-dated equipment, which will be replaced by the new playground.
